Guideposts for Success

MiConnections local projects are organized around four “Guideposts” or “Design Features” that are based on research on what youth can do to best prepare for their future. Local MiConnections sites are required to serve youth for at least two years and provide opportunities in each of the five Guideposts.

Preparatory ExperiencesI. Preparatory Experiences –The preparatory experience guidepost includes the activities and services undertaken by  youth while at the program site or collaborating education site. These activities are:

  • Career Assessment (both formal and informal)
  • Opportunity Awareness
  • Work Readiness Skills

 

II. Work-Based Learning Experiences – Work-based experiences include a range of activities that Work Based Experiences
build up on-the-job experiences. These experiences are:

  • Site Visits and Tours
  • Job Shadowing
  • Internships – paid and unpaid
  • Entrepreneurship Education

 

III. Youth Development & Leadership –Youth development and leadership activities Youth Leadership
help youth become self-sufficient and productive members of society. The components include:

  • Personal Growth
  • Adult Role Models and Mentors
  • Leadership Opportunities

 

IV. Connecting Activities – This feature examines the connecting activities necessary to assist Connecting Activities
the youth’s transition to their next phase in life. The focus is on services and activities requiring
support from other organizations. These services are:

  • Academic Tutoring
  • Mentoring Support
  • Accommodations/Assistive Technology
  • Transportation
  • Workforce Preparation
  • Post-secondary Education

 

V. Family Involvement & Supports - Parents, families and other caring adults who have:

  • High expectations, which build upon the young person's strengths, interests, and needs and fosters their ability to achieve independence and self-sufficiency
  • Been involved in their lives and assisting them toward adulthood
  • Access to information about employment, further education and community resources
  • Taken an active role in transition planning with schools and community partners
  • Access to medical, professional and peer support networks
